SEN. GRIFFO REAFFIRMS OPPOSITION TO THRUWAY TOLL HIKES

State Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R, C – Rome) today reiterated his opposition to the New York State Thruway toll hikes and called upon the Governor to intervene.

"I call upon Governor Spitzer to intervene on the impending NYS Thruway toll increases. While he was able to influence the Metropolitan Transit Authority to forego fare increases, I'm concerned over his decision to remain on the sidelines over the Thruway tolls. The Administration maintains that the two situations differ because the Thruway Authority is composed entirely of appointees of former Gov. George E. Pataki, while the MTA is now led by a chairman and executive director named by Gov. Spitzer. That rationale is baffling.

Those of us who live upstate and travel the Thruway think of this as an unacceptable contradiction and I urge the Governor to reconsider his position.

There is also legitimate criticism of inconsistencies over the how these Authorities go about their business and who they answer to. We're accountable to all people of New York, not just downstaters or upstaters.

I will soon be introducing legislation that will reform the way that the Authorities operate. There are legislators on both sides of the aisles that share my feelings on this. We're going to be heard."
